What suspension does
The suspension keeps the tires on the road, supports the weight of the car and absorbs bumps. Springs hold the weight, shocks and struts control the bounce, and control arms, ball joints and bushings hold everything in position. When any part wears, the car feels different well before it fails.
Symptoms worth acting on
A clunk over bumps, a car that bounces more than once after a dip, nose dive when you brake, drifting or pulling, a loose feeling in the steering and uneven tire wear are the common signs. Tires that wear on one edge or in cups suggest a suspension or alignment problem that new tires will not fix.
Shocks versus struts
Struts are a structural part of the suspension on many cars and are replaced as an assembly. Shocks only dampen motion. Both can wear gradually, often between 50,000 and 100,000 miles, depending on roads and load. We inspect for leaks, worn mounts and bounce and tell you which parts are due.
Ball joints, control arms and bushings
These parts hold the wheel in place. A worn ball joint can fail and let the wheel collapse, so we do not ignore a clunk from the front end. Worn bushings cause noise and wandering. We check play with the wheel off the ground and replace what is out of tolerance.
Alignment after repair
Replacing suspension parts changes alignment, so a post-repair alignment protects your tires and steering. Ask us about the plan when you get your estimate. Rough pavement on valley roads and potholes after winter rain shorten suspension life, so a yearly check is cheap protection.
