Where can I get a smog check in south Bakersfield?
Peña's Auto Electric, Smog & Repair at 303 Taft Hwy, Suite B, Bakersfield, CA 93307 does smog checks Monday to Friday 9:30 AM to 5:30 PM and Saturday 8 AM to 1 PM. Call (661) 599-9098.
How long does a smog check take?
A standard smog check usually takes 15 to 30 minutes. Walk-ins are welcome.
Do I need an appointment for a smog check?
No for standard smog checks. Online appointments are available for larger repairs.
Is there a smog station open on Saturday in Bakersfield?
Yes. Peña's is open Saturday 8 AM to 1 PM. We are closed Sunday.
What do I need to bring for a California smog check?
Bring the vehicle and your DMV renewal notice if you have one. Results are sent electronically to the DMV, so you do not deliver the certificate yourself.
How much is a smog check in Bakersfield?
Price depends on the vehicle type and includes the state certificate fee. Call (661) 599-9098 for an exact quote.
Do I need a STAR-certified station?
Your DMV renewal notice says whether a STAR or Test-Only station is required. Call us with the notice and we will confirm whether we can test your vehicle.
Which vehicles are exempt from smog checks in California?
Electric vehicles, gasoline vehicles eight model years old or newer (they pay a fee instead), 1975 and older gasoline vehicles and 1997 and older diesels are exempt from the biennial test. Your DMV notice is the final word.
How long is a smog certificate valid?
A smog certificate is valid for 90 days for registration.
Do I need a smog check when I sell a car?
In most cases the seller provides a valid smog certificate at change of ownership. There are exceptions, such as transfers within the immediate family and very new vehicles.
Will my car pass smog with the check engine light on?
No. A lit check engine light fails the California smog inspection.
Can a loose gas cap fail a smog check?
A loose or worn gas cap can set an evaporative system code that lights the check engine light and fails the test. Tighten it until it clicks and have the light checked if it stays on.
Failed smog and smog repair
My car failed smog. What now?
Keep the failure report, do not clear codes and bring the car in. Peña's diagnoses the cause, repairs it and retests in the same shop.
Can I get help paying for a smog repair?
Eligible owners may qualify for the state Consumer Assistance Program, which offers repair assistance and a vehicle retirement option. See bar.ca.gov for current rules.
Is a catalytic converter always the reason for a failed smog check?
No. Misfires, oxygen sensors, evaporative leaks, EGR problems and fuel mixture faults can cause failures, and we confirm the cause before recommending a converter.
Why was my car rejected with monitors not ready?
After a battery disconnect or a code clear, the computer needs days of mixed driving to complete its readiness monitors. Drive normally and return.
Should I clear the codes before retesting?
No. Clearing codes resets the monitors and can cause a not-ready result.
How long does a smog repair take?
A simple repair can be same-day. Diagnosis, parts and the drive cycle can add time, and we give a plan after diagnosis.
Check engine light and diagnostics
Can I drive with the check engine light on?
A steady light usually allows short, careful trips. A flashing light means a misfire severe enough to damage the catalytic converter, so slow down and get help.
Is a free code read the same as a diagnosis?
No. A code read shows the stored code. A diagnosis tests the system behind it to find the cause.
What does P0420 mean?
P0420 means catalyst system efficiency is below threshold. It does not always mean the converter is bad; exhaust leaks, sensors and misfires can set it.
Why did the check engine light come on after I filled up?
A loose gas cap is a common cause. Tighten it until it clicks and the light may clear after several drives.
Should the oil pressure or temperature light ever be ignored?
No. Red oil pressure and engine temperature lights mean pull over safely and shut off the engine.
Auto electrical
Who fixes car electrical problems in south Bakersfield?
Peña's Auto Electric specializes in electrical diagnosis and repair, including batteries, charging, starting, lighting and wiring.
How long does a car battery last in Bakersfield?
Often three to five years, and sometimes less because summer heat shortens battery life.
How do I tell a bad battery from a bad alternator?
If the car starts after a jump but dies soon after, suspect the alternator. If it will not hold a charge overnight, suspect the battery or a drain. A test confirms.
What voltage should a healthy battery and alternator show?
A battery reads about 12.6 volts at rest, and the alternator should push roughly 13.5 to 14.7 volts with the engine running.
Why does my fuse keep blowing?
A fuse that keeps blowing points to a short or an overloaded circuit. Do not install a larger fuse; trace the circuit.
Can you fix headlights and taillights?
Yes. We repair bulbs, sockets, connectors, relays and wiring. A customer review notes a quick, fairly priced Prius headlight and taillight fix.
Maintenance, brakes and repairs
Do you do oil changes and tune-ups?
Yes. We follow your owner's manual for oil type, intervals and tune-up parts.
When should I replace my timing belt?
Most manufacturers call for a timing belt around 60,000 to 100,000 miles. Check your owner's manual. On many engines the water pump sits behind the belt, so replacing both together saves labor.
How do I know when brake pads need replacing?
Squealing, grinding, a pulsing pedal or longer stops are signs, and pads are commonly replaced near 3 millimeters of friction material.
How long do shocks and struts last?
Often 50,000 to 100,000 miles, depending on roads and load.
What are signs of a failing transmission?
Slipping, delayed engagement, harsh shifts, a burning smell and reddish fluid leaks are common signs.
Do you work on all makes and models?
Yes. Tell us the year, make and model when you call.
