Oil changes that fit your engine
The right oil depends on your engine, not on a sticker from the last shop. Your owner's manual specifies the viscosity and the oil specification, such as a particular synthetic grade. Many newer cars use an oil life monitor that tells you when to change based on how you drive. We follow the manual and the monitor, not a one-size mileage number.
Heat changes the math
Bakersfield's long stretch of 100 degree days is hard on oil. Heat thins and breaks down oil faster, and short trips, towing and idling in traffic count as severe service in many owner's manuals. If your driving fits those patterns, your manual may call for shorter intervals. We help you read which schedule applies to you.
Tune-ups today
Modern engines do not need a tune-up in the old sense of points and timing, but they do need ignition parts, filters and fluids replaced at intervals. A tune-up here means checking and replacing spark plugs when due, replacing air and fuel filters as specified, inspecting belts and hoses and checking the battery and charging system.
Spark plugs
Spark plugs wear. Copper plugs may need replacement around 30,000 miles, while iridium and platinum plugs often last 60,000 to 100,000 miles. Worn plugs cause misfires, rough idle, poor fuel economy and, in some cases, a failed smog check. We replace them on the manufacturer's interval and check the coils at the same time.
Maintenance and smog together
A smog check is the easiest time to catch maintenance problems. A recent oil change helps the test, and a shop that does maintenance and smog under one roof can fix a small problem before it becomes a failure. If your registration is due, ask for both on the same visit.
