Why car keys are an electrical job
Most keys made since the late 1990s contain a transponder chip that talks to the car's immobilizer. The car will not start unless the chip's code matches. Replacing a key is therefore part cutting, part programming. That is why an auto electric shop is a natural place to handle keys: the programming side is electronic.
Lost your only key
If you have no working key, the replacement process usually requires proof of ownership, such as a photo ID and registration, and the vehicle's VIN. A new key is cut and programmed to the car. Have the car at the shop if possible, or call us to ask what is needed before you arrange a tow.
Key fob programming
A remote fob can often be programmed separately from the key. Some vehicles allow a simple procedure, and others need specialized equipment. Call with your year, make and model. We will tell you whether we can do your vehicle before you make the trip.
Spare keys are cheaper than replacements
A spare made while you still have a working key is usually simpler than recreating all keys after losing the last one. If you have only one key, a spare is one of the cheapest forms of insurance for a car that is your daily transport.
Locked out
A lockout is a different problem from a lost key. If your keys are inside the car, tell us what happened. Our locked-out options guide explains what can and cannot be done safely without damaging the door or window.
