A rough idle or stalling usually comes from one of four things: air leaks, fuel delivery, ignition or sensors. Testing each in turn narrows it down.
Key takeaways
- Think air, fuel, spark, sensors.
- Vacuum leaks are common.
- Check the battery too.
Air problems
Vacuum leaks, dirty throttle bodies and a bad mass airflow sensor.
Fuel problems
Weak pumps, clogged filters and dirty injectors.
Ignition problems
Worn plugs, failing coils.
Sensors and electrical
Crankshaft sensors and poor grounds.

Idle air and the throttle body
At idle the engine breathes through a small controlled opening. Carbon buildup in the throttle body or a failing idle control can make idle rough or cause stalling. Cleaning the throttle body and relearning the idle often fixes it. If cleaning does not help, the cause may be a vacuum leak or a sensor.
When stalling is urgent
A car that stalls at speed loses power steering assist and brake boost, which makes it harder to control. If your car stalls while driving, do not rely on it for freeway trips until it is fixed. Pull over safely and restart only if the car runs normally. Call for help if it stalls repeatedly. Stalling is a safety problem as well as an inconvenience.
Fuel and fuel pressure
A weak fuel pump or a clogged filter can cause stalling under load or hesitation when accelerating. A technician measures fuel pressure and compares it to specification. Running the car low on fuel often in hot weather can overheat the pump and shorten its life. Keeping the tank above a quarter helps. If the car starts hard after sitting, mention it, because that pattern suggests a fuel pressure bleed-down problem.
